John Phillips Medal
Established in 1960 by Dr. W. S. Bisat
The John Phillips Medal is awarded by the Council of the Society not more frequently than biennially as an acknowledgment of distinguished contributions to, or of work bearing upon knowledge of the stratigraphy or palaeontology of the north of England.

Sorby Medal
Established by Professor William George Fearnsides in 1960
The Sorby Medal is
awarded by the Council of the Society not more frequently than biennially as an
acknowledgment of either:
distinguished contributions to geological knowledge of Yorkshire and the north of
England, or
distinguished contributions to geological knowledge by a person associated with
Yorkshire and the north of England by birth, training or locus of researches.
Henry Clifton Sorby, born in 1826, was perhaps the greatest scientist connected to the town of Sheffield. He pioneered the use of microscopic petrography amongst other things. A fuller account of the life and work of Sorby can be found at theHenry Clifton Sorby website.

Fearnsides Prize
Established in 1968 by Professor William George Fearnsides
The Fearnsides Prize is awarded not more frequently than biennially to a person under 30 years of age on the 1st December in the year of the award, who has shown promise in geological research or the geological sciences and who is associated with the north of England by birth, training or locus of research.

Moore Medal
Established by former students, in 1988, in honour of Professor & Mrs. L.
R. Moore
The Moore Medal is awarded not more frequently than biennially as an acknowledgement of services to geology in the north of England.
