Overview

The aim of this day is to visit a series of locations in Saddleworth and Marsden that display strata from the lower Kinderscout age rocks (Shale Grit and Kinderscout Grits) to the stratigraphically-younger Marsdenian rocks in the area (Marsden Shales, Midgeley Grit).  These locations allow a visitor to see how the sedimentary system evolved at this time, displaying a range of strata from distal marine, pro-delta, delta front and delta top environments.

Meeting Point: Dove Stone (RSPB) Main Car Park, near Greenfield, Saddleworth.  Grid Reference SE01340346  (Postcode for the area is:  OL3 7NE.  What3Words: kilowatt.debit.epidemics)

Access and Requirements

There will be some mostly flat walking in the morning of about 2km.  Afternoon will involve a walk of about 2km with a ascent (quite steep at one point) of about 75 metres.
