Skinningrove, Yorkshire Coast: Cleveland Ironstone and associated Jurassic Strata

Skinningrove, Yorkshire Coast:

Cleveland Ironstone

and associated

Jurassic Strata

Skinningrove Harbour car park, Yorkshire Coast

16th September 2023 10:00 BST

led by Steve Livera

This trip is once again fully booked

The field trip will visit the cliff sequence east of Skinningrove that exposes the Redcar Mudstone through to the Saltwick Formations, as well as the Land of Iron Museum in Skinningrove (optional). Our main interest for the trip is the Staithes Sandstone and Cleveland Ironstone Formations seen high in the cliffs and very well exposed in the wave cut platform, the latter the result of a spectacular landslip which results in near vertical bedding. The features, timing and origin of the landslip will be discussed as well as the sedimentology and depositional environment of both formations. This area has a long period of alum, cementstone and ironstone extraction and this history and remnant archaeology will be illustrated. At the end of the trip there is a bonus outcrop that reflects the industry of the area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
